Big changes are coming to Medicare prescription drug coverage in 2027, and anyone relying on a low-cost Part D plan should take a closer look before automatically renewing.
The temporary federal Medicare Part D Premium Stabilization Demonstration ends December 31, 2026. The program helped stabilize premiums while major changes were being made to the Part D program.
That does not mean every $0 Part D plan disappears in 2027. But it does mean the market is changing—and some beneficiaries could see substantially higher premiums depending on their plan and location.
For ZIP code 78216, our 2027 quoting system currently shows standalone Part D options including:
| 2027 Part D Plan | Monthly Premium |
|---|---|
| HealthSpring Assurance Rx | $98.00 |
| Aetna SilverScript Choice* | $111.40 |
| HealthSpring Extra Rx | $164.70 |
*Shown in our system as not appointed to sell.
At $98 per month, that’s $1,176 a year in premiums alone—before applicable deductibles, copays and other prescription costs.
That’s a big difference from the $0-premium drug plans many Medicare beneficiaries have become accustomed to.
This is one reason we believe Medicare Advantage deserves a serious look for 2027.
Many Medicare Advantage plans combine your Medicare medical coverage and Part D prescription drug coverage into one plan, and $0-premium Medicare Advantage options continue to be available in Texas. You must continue paying your Medicare Part B premium.
Depending on the plan, Medicare Advantage may also include additional benefits such as dental, vision and hearing coverage.
And for people concerned about Medicare Advantage copays, there are strategies worth considering. For example, an optional hospital indemnity plan can provide fixed cash benefits for covered expenses such as hospital confinement, ambulance services, emergency care, skilled nursing and outpatient surgery.
The goal isn’t simply to find the plan with the lowest premium.
It’s to build the Medicare strategy that gives you the best overall combination of coverage, protection and cost.
Medicare is changing. Drug plan premiums are changing. And the plan that made sense for you in 2026 may not be the best choice for 2027.
Before you automatically renew, let Baby Boomer Rescue compare the numbers for you.
We’ll compare your Medicare Advantage and Part D options based on your prescriptions, doctors and healthcare needs—and show you where you may be able to save.
